China

China - Mei Xien and Gui Lin
24 Sept-4 Oct 2011
Im born and raised in Indonesia but my parents are chinese. Apparently my great grandfather sail to Indonesia for better fortune. A year before my grandfather died he come 'home' and visit his homeland rebuild our ancestors cemetery. Only until this year we can travel as a big family to visit our relatives in China. Its a little village called Mei Xien. It was a great trip and fascinating to see where I originally come from. I still cannot imagine the life my great grandfather had and how brave he was to travel to Indonesia without having any idea of the place for better fortune. (Click here for more info)

Relatives that still lives in the old original house.

The tomb my Grandfather build for his great grandfather.

The family Group photo :D
There was 22 of us so you can Imagine how chaotic the trip can be but I truly  enjoy our moment together as chances like this may not come again.

Belitung Island

Traveling have always been my passion. Sometimes just walking around the city or even wondering around Waitrose. There is so much to see and discover in this world and so little time.

On summer 2011, I visit several places - Belitung Island - Yogyakarta - China

First stop - Belitung Island
Belitung Island is one out of 18,000 islands in Indonesia. Its famous for its huge rocks and nature beauty. The sand are white as soft as sifted icing sugars. Hot humid air with glimmering sun reflected on crystal clear sea water. And the best part we were greeted with friendly smiles of the locals. These are the kindness in life.
It was a three day photography tour I cannot explain to you how beautiful nature can be.

Visit Indonesia!

a thought.

Stairs are made by paths. Passage of many feet stepping into different layers of ground height. Rothery (1912) calls it land stairs. Irregular size and height, contradict with staircases today.

Some see staircase as a bridge from a level to another level. Stairs are like chameleon. They disguise itself to match the interest of the viewer. Art object, Structural idea, manifestation of pomp and manners, behavioural setting, controller of out gait, political icon, legal prescription, poetic fancy, or the locus of an epidemic of cruel and injurious falls.

The nature of stairs gives a sense of longevity, constant rebirth, replication and repetition. One should never give way to the temptation of repeating the monotonous. Staircases can create a feeling of attractiveness or rejection, of everyday appearance or festive, brisk or comfortable, facile or cumbersome, luxuriant or economical. We can perceive it as robust or delicate, as burdensome or hovering, as resting or tightened, as rustic or elegant, as scanty or luxurious characterized by volume or resign. And of course the total picture of the building and area will influence this judgement.

Stairs as architectural elements terms: order, arrangement, eurhythmy, symmetry, propriety and economy. They think stairs as veins and arteries of buildings; as objects of beauty.

"Beauty is there, when the necessary is performed, but stay hidden" - Goethe.

Stares should not be looked upon as a necessity, which cannot be ignored but taken advantage of as an occasion to realize artistic accents of animating tension and motion within the actual architectural picture. Stairs are always an element of motion. Its slanting position counteract the vertical and horizontal lines. It never really 'rest' as the building does but always the beginning and the end, the top and the bottom bring forth its visible effect; they pontificate about the dimension of stairs.

Development of technology the elevator and escalator as the bridge however, stairs are not superseded and rendered obsolete by these mechanical systems, stair been retained as the backup system. It become a route of last resort where the potential for catastrophe demands a design that well always be safe and convenient. But ironically stairs itself can be seen as a dangerous place.

Stairs have many roles.  It have always become a symbol to represent human spiritual aspiration and cosmography; to demonstrate secular power and authority, prestige and status; for aesthetic, architectural and spatial manipulation. To make adjoining floors seem close and the ascent a gently transition; or to accentuate the separateness of spaces, with the staircase acting as a bridge.

Technical terms associated with a stair.
Step: The portion of the stair where the foot lands during  ascending/descending.
Tread: The horizontal portion of a step.
Riser: The vertical portion of a step.
Stringer: The inclined member which supports the steps.
Landing: It is the horizontal platform provided at the end of each flight.
Pitch: It is the slope of the stair.
Railing: It is the inclined member of a stair which is to support the hand.
while descending or ascending.
Baluster: It is the vertical intermediate support of the hand-rail.

Hope this lil thought of mine inspire you all.

Heathrow Airport

I forgot to tell you about this but it was my first time in my life to almost stay a night in an airport. It was quite fun. No. I'm lying. No its not fun. It was terrifying. The endless wait of uncertainty, growling stomach of emptiness, and dry skin cause of the cold snow breeze isn't a pleasant feeling; especially it was greeted before with an excitement to be back home soon. Luckily I was going home with a friend and there was two of us. At least we have each others company. Hopefully this year I wouldn't have to wait for 24 hours extra to go back home.

Sunshine

People said that i would be depressed because of the fact that I'm living in London. Hyperbole. In fact its pretty sunny lately and doesn't rain. I hope it stays this way!

This was how clear and blue the sky was.

My classmates and I cannot resist the gorgeous weather so we all sit outside on the little grass we got in the middle of our campus site, chat and ate our lunch! It was such a great day. The weather actually do effect your mood. Funny, I always avoid the sun back home and complain the hot and humid weather, which is all year long and try to be in a full air conditioner room, now I'm craving for sunshine and warmth. I miss home.
